The
Family Advocacy Program provides child/spouse abuse prevention, treatment,
education and training, and supportive services to families within
and surrounding the Fort Monroe community. These services promote
healthy family relationships, strengthen communications and increase
cohesion of family units.
Services include, but are not limited to:

Domestic Violence Awareness educational programs which
discuss the effects of domestic violence on children, the abuser's
power and control, and available resources for individuals seeking
intervention
- Child
Abuse Awareness educational programs for staff, military
personnel and families, which discusses the four types of abuse,
being an advocate for a child in need, and confidentiality.
- Community
Awareness Programs, which promote healthy families and
the prevention of child abuse and domestic violence.
- Short-term
crisis counseling to provide intervention and support
to individuals or families in need.
- Advocacy
and referral
to local agencies that can provide additional resources and intervention
- Child

Child
and/or spouse abuse is a crime. The following, is a list of questions
and answers to help you identify and report any type of abuse.
What is abuse?
Abuse is a form of power and control. Abuse can manifest itself
in many ways, such as physical abuse (bruises, cuts), emotional
abuse (name-calling, put-downs), neglect (lack of care/nutrition),
and sexual abuse (rape, sexual harassment).
If I witness abuse, whom shall I tell?
The Report Point of Contact at Fort Monroe is the Military
Police (MP). The MP can be reached 24 hours a day, 7 days
a week at 788-2238. You may also contact the FAP Manager at 788-3993.
Can I remain anonymous while reporting abuse?
Yes. Many people choose to remain anonymous when reporting
abuse.
If I choose to give my name when reporting abuse, how involved
will I be?
The MP's and Social Work Services will contact you to gather
information regarding the incident that you reported.
What happens once abuse is reported?
The MP will response to the incident and notify FAP Social
Work Services. Once information has been gathered, the Case Review
Committee (CRC) meets to make a determination and, if necessary,
to provide referrals for treatment.
What services are available for individuals being abused?
There is a number of services available for victim of abuse.
The FAP Manager (FAPM) can put individuals and families in touch
with services offered though Fort Monroe, such as the Victim Advocate
Program. The FAPM can also provide you with information
on community agencies that provide services such as counseling
or a shelter to those in need.
