 Exceptional Family Member Program (EFMP)

  Fort Monroe EFMP

The Exceptional Family Member Program (EFMP) is a mandatory enrollment program for family members, regardless of age, of an active duty soldier with any medical or educational disability that requires special medical treatment, education, or counseling.

The Army will consider the special needs of enrolled exceptional family members during the assignment process and will attempt to assign the soldier to an area where the needs of the family member can be met.

EFMP enrollment is MANDATORY if an enrolling condition exists. The following are some conditions that require enrollment (not all inclusive):

• Require more medical support or follow-up care than commonly provided by a family practitioner in an outpatient setting

• ADD/ADHD: and requires seeing more than just a Family Practice physician (i.e. counselor, psychologist, psychiatrist, pediatrician, etc) whether on medication or not

• Allergies: If follow-up with an allergist or if allergy shots are required

• Asthma: treated with medication within the past five years

• Cancer: a diagnosis of cancer within the past five years

• Cerebral Palsy

• Delayed Speech, Developmental Delays

• Depression

• Drug/Alcohol Use or Abuse

• Diabetes

• Hearing Problems

• Heart Conditions

• Seizure Disorders

• Sickle Cell Disease

• Special Education Requirements (information is utilized by DoDDS schools overseas)

• Sight: not corrected by glasses

• Speech Therapy

• Thyroid: Grave’s, etc. which requires follow-up by more than a family practitioner

• Have any serious or chronic medical problem, physical disability and/or mental health disorder

• Have any other medical, educational, counseling, or social need
